Scripture

1 John 4:18 (NIV): “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.” – 1 John 4:18 (NIV)

Fear is one of the greatest obstacles in our walk with God. It can paralyze us, hold us back from our calling, and prevent us from fully experiencing the love of Christ. Yet, 1 John 4:18 reminds us that God’s love is greater than our fears. His perfect love is powerful—it has the ability to drive out every form of fear that threatens our peace and faith.

The fear mentioned in this verse is tied to punishment and judgment. Many people struggle with a deep-seated fear of not being good enough, of failing, or of being rejected by God. However, the truth of the Gospel is that we are fully accepted, fully known, and fully loved by God through Jesus Christ. When we understand and embrace this truth, fear loses its grip on us.

God’s love is perfect, not because of anything we have done, but because of who He is. He loves us unconditionally, without hesitation or reservation. His love assures us that we are secure in Him, that we have nothing to fear because He is always with us.
