Scripture: Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it. — Hebrews 13:2 (NIV)
***
In the biblical account of Lot, we see a powerful demonstration of the impact of a good heart. Living in the city of Sodom, Lot was surrounded by wickedness, yet he remained a man of kindness and hospitality. One evening, as he sat at the city gate, he saw two travelers and, without hesitation, invited them into his home, offering them food, shelter, and protection (Genesis 19:1-3). What Lot did not realize at the time was that these men were angels sent by God.
Lot’s good heart and willingness to serve strangers led to his salvation. The people of Sodom, who were corrupt and violent, sought to harm the visitors, but Lot defended them, demonstrating his righteous character. Because of his kindness, the angels revealed their true identities and warned him of the impending destruction of the city. They led him and his family to safety, sparing them from the judgment that fell upon Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:12-17).
This story reminds us of the power of a good heart. Lot did not know who these strangers were, yet he chose to do good. His actions teach us several valuable lessons:
Hospitality Opens Doors to Divine Encounters – When we show kindness and welcome others, we position ourselves for divine blessings. Lot’s hospitality led to his rescue.
A Good Heart Stands in Contrast to the World – While the people of Sodom lived in sin, Lot’s kindness set him apart. As believers, our goodness should shine even in dark places.
God Honors Those Who Honor Others – Lot’s compassion led to his salvation. When we love and serve others selflessly, God notices and rewards our faithfulness.
Let this story encourage us to cultivate hearts full of kindness, hospitality, and righteousness. In a world that often values self-interest, may we choose to extend love to strangers, knowing that in doing so, we might just be entertaining angels—or positioning ourselves for God’s miraculous intervention.
Prayer: Lord, help me to have a good heart, like Lot, willing to serve and love others selflessly. Give me the wisdom to recognize divine opportunities in my acts of kindness. May my life reflect Your love, and may I always be ready to extend hospitality, knowing that You see and honor a heart that chooses goodness.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
