Scripture Reading: Romans 3:21-26

Righteousness is one of the central themes of the Bible and is foundational to the Christian faith. It speaks of being in a right relationship with God, not through our own efforts, but as a gift through faith in Jesus Christ. Today, we will explore what righteousness means, how we receive it, and how it transforms our lives.

I. Understanding Righteousness
  1. Definition: Righteousness is the state of being morally correct and justifiable. Biblically, it means being in right standing with God. It’s not merely about moral actions but about a relational standing before God.

  2. Human Condition: Romans 3:23 reminds us, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” No one can attain righteousness through their deeds because we are all flawed and have fallen short of God’s standards.

II. The Gift of Righteousness
  1. Provided by God: Romans 3:24-25 tells us, “and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” Righteousness is a gift from God, provided through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.

  2. Through Faith: Righteousness is received through faith. Romans 4:5 says, “However, to the one who does not work but trusts God who justifies the ungodly, their faith is credited as righteousness.” Faith in Jesus is the key to receiving this righteousness.

  3. Imputed Righteousness: 2 Corinthians 5:21 declares, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” This means that Jesus took our sin upon Himself, and in exchange, we received His righteousness.

III. The Effects of Righteousness
  1. Peace with God: Romans 5:1 states, “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Righteousness brings reconciliation and peace with God, ending the enmity caused by sin.

  2. Freedom from Condemnation: Romans 8:1 assures us, “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” This means we are no longer under the sentence of guilt or shame, but we are free to live in the grace of God.

  3. A Transformed Life: Righteousness leads to a transformed life. Titus 2:11-12 teaches us that the grace of God teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and live upright, godly lives. Righteousness is not just a status; it’s a call to live differently.

IV. Living Out Our Righteousness
  1. Faith and Works: James 2:17 says, “Faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” Our righteousness in Christ should produce good works, not as a means to earn salvation, but as evidence of our faith.

  2. Ambassadors of Christ: 2 Corinthians 5:20 reminds us that we are Christ’s ambassadors, called to represent Him and His righteousness to the world. Our lives should reflect the righteousness we have received, leading others to Him.

Final thought

Righteousness is a gift from God, freely given to those who place their faith in Jesus Christ. It brings peace with God, freedom from condemnation, and a transformed life. Let us embrace this gift, live it out daily, and share it with others. As we walk in the righteousness of Christ, may our lives be a testimony of His grace and love.

Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of righteousness through Jesus Christ. Help us to walk in the freedom and peace that comes from being right with You. May our lives reflect Your righteousness and draw others to Your love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
